Fishing devastates the oceans and causes the greatest animal suffering, which is why actions to change this reality are urgently needed and are already underway. World Oceans Day, celebrated today, June 8, is an opportunity to remember how the impact of human activity that causes the death of a gigantic number of fish and other marine animals is also pushing the existence of the oceans to their limits. . IT SHOULD BE CALLED “WATER” PLANET: The oceans occupy 75% of the Earth's surface  and, therefore, contain the largest number of animals and vegetation on the planet and, naturally, that is why between 50 and 80% of the oxygen in the world. planet occurs in the oceans.

More than two years ago, the UN published a report Ca Cell Numbers from its Group of Experts on Climate Change warning that the rise in sea level continues to advance due to the melting of ice in the northern and southern extremes of the planet caused by the greenhouse gases generated by human activity. As demonstrated by an infographic from Statista , the global ocean temperature in 2020 was 0.76 degrees above that recorded in the 20th century. In one year alone, 1 trillion, six hundred and thirteen billion fish are killed in the sea and in fish farms for human consumption. It is an immense amount, but to get a clearer idea let's say that it is equal to the human population of 210 times the planet Earth.

All of this has caused marine vertebrate species to decline by 49% between 1970 and 2012 , fish species that are consumed by humans have declined even more, and tropical reefs have lost more than half of their corals in the last 30 years. . This is alarming if we consider that more than 25% of marine species live in coral reefs. Unlike terrestrial animals used for consumption, which have some regulations, although minimal, on handling and slaughter processes, fish are unprotected by the law and that is why changes are urgently needed to reduce their suffering. Check out our latest research on salmon farms  Scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change declared that it is useless to dedicate efforts to reducing carbon emissions generated by transportation if we continue producing our food from an obsolete and unsustainable system such as industrial livestock farming. , and this includes, of course, the impact of industrial fishing.
